CA: John Deere Review by Todd from Troutville, VA (1/5 stars) I will neve
medium

I will never own another John Deere lawn mower. I have a LA165 with less than 170hrs that needs a new rear end. A $700.00 repair cost. Nobody at John Deere cares. Made several phone calls to the dealer and directly to John Deere. I should have just bought a cheap mower but I got caught up in the John Deere quality store. Man was I a sucker.

Parts lookup request: John Deere 165 Hydro oil filler/dipstick
low

Hey all. The oil filler/dipstick tube snapped off at the bottom of a JD 165 hydro lawnmower I’m working on for a friend… it was made in 1986 I believe. 1 cylinder Kawasaki engine. Hoping someone can give me the part number so I can look it up on eBay or get it from a JD dealer directly (closed on Sunday). Thanks in advance.

John Deere 165 Hydro smoking from the flywheel after running and smelling like oil. Where should I look first?
low

I am an amateur mechanic. I’m a golf course superintendent so I work with machines all day everyday so I am very “mechanically inclined” but when it comes to getting into the inner workings of an engine - lapping valves and compression testing and all that stuff I leave it up to our head mechanic. Diagnostics are definitely not my specialty but once I know what’s wrong I can usually take things apart and put them back together pretty well. Anyway with that out of the way Friends of ours got a 165 Hydro given to them for free. They were only told “it was running 2 years ago when my husband died, and it’s been in storage since” It’s in good shape. I offered to swap the belts, clean carb, check spark plugs, change filters and fluids and in this case put a new seat on it. Basic stuff. However I’ve got it running and it fires up okay. But after running for a few minutes it gets very hot, seems to lack power, and threatens to stall if I don’t slow down and let it catch up…. Then when I shut it off you can see smoke rising from the fly wheel and smell an oily smell. Whats the first place to look? Any guidance appreciated. As I said I can take things apart and possibly visually identify obvious problems but if it gets too into the weeds I may need to call in a pro (I’ll just take it to my mechanic at work)
